Random Acts of Kindness for Sandy Hook

As educators, we remember and honor our fallen colleagues and their students from Sandy Hook School.  We honor them each day in our classrooms in which we continue their dream of teaching our children.  We honor their memory with our service.  Join with teachers everywhere in committing random acts of kindness to show our love for Sandy Hook.

All during this week, please promote the RAK on social media.  Use the hashtag:  #love4SH. Get in the giving spirit and promote random acts if kindness at school, in your community and at home!

D.I.Y December; A holiday Linky Party!

So this week I have many projects in my plans!! I am making placemats, shape snowmen, and cinnamon ornaments!  I made snowglobes last week,, with a writing assigment: 'What would it be like if you lived in a snow globe?'

I love this time of year and how much fun I can make the common core in kindergarten!  I always find a way to include the common core in a craft or project!

During the week I will be updating this post as I create more projects!!  So far we have completed the DIY snowglobe project, so here it is!  All you need is writing paper, a circle cut out (light blue) and a trapezoid as the stand (black), maybe a little glitter, crayons and a big imagination!  Let me know what you think!

Remembering Sandy Hook and some Random Acts of Kindness

As educators, we remember and honor our fallen colleagues and their students from Sandy Hook School. We honor them each day in our classrooms in which we continue their dream of teaching our children. We honor their memory with our service. Join with teachers everywhere in committing random acts of kindness to show our love for Sandy Hook.

The day of the tragedy at Sandy Hook, I heard about it through texts but didnt realize the devastation until after school when I read the articles.  How horrific of an event, how terrible it would have been, but we have an opportunity to provide Random Acts of Kindness to people in our lives that usually do not get the recognition for what they do every day.

This week, my class will be performing random acts of kindness in school!  I am excited to bring this idea to the kids because as kindergarteners, we have the opportunity to use our imaginations, creativity and cuteness to make a teacher, staff member, janitor, administrator, or parent smile and remember to be kind, caring and positive.  :)

We will be watching a Random Acts of Kindness video from Youtube to get some ideas!  Check it out; this is easy to do at any gradelevel!  You can do it too! :)  Join in the fun, and put a smile on someone's face this week!  :)

10 Things I am Thankful for...

It's Thanksgiving, and the food has been made and eaten.  And the kitchen is still a mess...but we will get to that eventually! I wanted to post about the things I am thankful for, because since I took my first teaching position a little over a year ago, so many great things have come my way!

1.  I am thankful for my amazing family, friends and bf.  I couldn't stay positive, and motivated without your constant support.

2. I am thankful for my Lake Myra friends, that support me and my ambitions daily!  I am also thankful for the laughs that come along with teaching in kinder!!

3.  I am thankful for an awesome class of hard working 5 and 6 year olds! I am thankful for the smile they can put on my face every day!

4.  I am thankful for fabulous classroom parents who cut out everything I laminate, donate supplies, and spend their time in my classroom, helping me provide rigor and higher level thinking in my classroom weekly!

5.  I am thankful for my bf and mom pushing me to start my TpT store.  I have reached a milestone 4 months before I thought I would!  Thank You!!!

6.  I am thankful for the opportunity to teach and live my passion weekly!

7.  I am thankful for relaxing 4 day weekends!

8.  I am thankful for my health, as I know how many germs are in a Kinder classroom :)

9.  I am thankful for being able to provide my family that is far away, a forum to see what I do in my classroom, as I know if I was closer my mom would be in my classroom weekly!!

10.  I am thankful for everyone who has ever encouraged me, pushed me or helped me achieve my goals and aspirations!

What are you thankful for?? I'd love to hear from you, in the comments!

So, in other news, I am changing my blog, tpt, and pinterest name!! The total transformation will be coming soon.  My new name will be "Creating. Teaching. Inspiring"

I feel as thought this name is one I can keep forever, throughout my career.  This is my mission in education!  I am really excited about this switch!  Check back soon for an updated look!!!

I am thankful for .. technology at its finest!

The big push at Lake Myra is technology in every classroom.  Today we worked on paper slides, which we learned about in a professional development this past month.  So, today was the day I attempted to make one!  It actually didn't take long and the kids loved it :)  This is a great, easy way to incorporate technology into your classroom with a fun paper slide!  Hope you enjoy our hard work!

Social media frenzy!

I have been so busy lately working on joining Pinterest boards, tweeting, posting FB posts and putting up new products! This is like another full time job, but I am loving it!

Check out the links to the left to check out my social media fun!

I have also been busy in the classroom! We have done a scarecrow unit since I last posted! And we are about to begin a "what are you thankful for" unit!

The kids loved the scarecrow unit!  We did a math graphing activity and a patterned writing prompt!

We also worked on identifying 4 main details in a story! I modeled the thought process and then the kids independently drew pictures of the key details in the story!

Not my best art work but my Pete the Cat drawings were pretty impressive! At least I thought so!  Haha

I have created a new literacy center that scaffolds students to be writing sentences independently!  You can find the product on TpT!

Have fun learning!!

I survived my first HaLlOwEen in KiNdErGaRtEn!

This past week was a ton of fun with Halloween and the craziness that comes with it!  Our school doesn't celebrate Halloween as a school.. Like no costumes or parade but since it was on a Thursday we decided we would go all out PURPLE for antibullying!  It ended up being a really fun day filled with laughs, smiles, learning and crafts!

Oh ya.. And we wore tutus!  Our shirts say.. I am tutu busy being a Leader... To be a bully!  It was a great day and I think we brought some awareness to antibullying!

We also made a bar craft and followed it up with some shape graphing!  Our bats finished up our bats unit and look great in the hall!

One if the standards we worked on was answering and asking questions about key details.  We are scaffolding up to actually being able to ask questions so this week we worked on determining what the key details are.  I modeled how they would determine key details and this is how our work turned out!  We will continue to scaffold this skill until we can write our own questions... Right now we are just drawing the picture!

First Week back!

Its the first week back at school and we are in FULL swing! NO more rest, NO more excuses... We are getting down to business! :).  The kids are a bit more mature and more is definitely expected of them this quarter.  We have created a classroom motto: " I am focused, I am motivated, I am important". We recite this every day and they are really started to understand it!  That makes my teacher heart happy! :)

We have begun fully implementing The Leader in Me 7 habits and the kids are startig to understand and apply "be proactive" in their daily lives.  We are working on one habit at a time!  :) I really think this 7 habits process for Lake Myra will be life changing for a lot of students and is definitely forming my teaching philosophy and personal teaching mission.  We watched The kid President today and the kids really loved it!  Parents, teachers, teens, families.. Doesn't matter .. It can be life changing!! Check it out!  Leave me a comment on what you thought :)

This quarter we are already fully carrying out reading groups and the new listening center is open! We are also working hard on our sight words and listening comprehension.

Happy Fall Ya'll !!

Because I named this post, Happy Fall Ya'll, it really makes me think that 1. i really am becoming southerner and 2. Wahoo! its actually finally fall in the south!

I have been busy over trackout working on tpt, because as I have said before I have been a little neglectful of tpt!  I made two new products, one for literacy and one for math!  I am loving the new activities and cant wait to get back to school to use them!

The literacy pack is focused on sight words and the math pack is really focused on counting to 25.  Both products are about 56 pages and are aligned to the common core.  Because it is finally feeling like fall in NC I am putting my store on sale this weekend (Oct. 12-13) 20% off!  Now is your time to check out my store and grab anything you have wishlisted!  Grab it this weekend at Katelin's Kreative Kindergarten TpT store!

Here are some pictures of my new math unit!  Again, its focused on counting.  It aligns to the common core K.CC 1, K.CC 4, K.CC 6.

Drum Roll Please......

I officially made a new product!!!!  This past quarter prompted a little brainstorming on sight word instruction! And this is what I came up with...

This is a 56 page document that is fantastic for sight word centers or word work!  The Mix it & fix it center really works on higher level thinking and pushes students to make those letter to work connections!

Happy Learning!

Letter Land Sounds and Letter Names

So during this quarter we have been really focused on letter names and sounds.  As we track out this Friday (wahoo!) for three weeks students should really still be practicing, so I made this cute video with kids doing all of the sounds, names and movements.  This is how we practice it at school, so the kids can practice it this way at home with their friends on the computer! :)

This video contains Letter Land cards and movements.  The cards and movements are owned and copyrighted by LetterLand International Ltd.  It is used for kindergarten educational purposes.

Scholastic is Fantastic!!!

So I have always been skeptical of sending out the scholastic book order forms, mostly because I didnt know how it worked and I didn't have enough time for one more thing! So I was brave two weeks ago and finally sent them out.  Well, I have been foolish for the last few months; Scholastic is FANTASTIC!  I already have 400 bonus points, so I can get 3-4 new books just because two of my classroom parents put my classroom code in! :)  Its awesome!  I love books!!

I went onto the scholastic website and made a classroom wishlist so families & friends can donate books to my classroom also!  I am so excited!  My classroom code is MF4FT.  I am so glad I started sending out the order forms!

I have the best mom ever! :)

So my mom was busy helping my sister plan her wedding and there was 3 weeks before the wedding.  We were talking about how I really wanted to buy some bags for my take home reading program! So my mom being the crafty lady she is volunteered to sew my class really nice fabric bags for each student to use as their take home reading bag! She spent hours sewing all of these bags.  They turned out perfect and the wedding went off without a hitch!  ! She is the absolute best and amazing! THANK YOU MOM!

Right after my twin sister got married!!

The awesome bag my mom pulled off 3 weeks before the wedding! :)

On another topic... Last week we had the Fun Run where everyone in the school goes out to the track one grade level at a time and runs the track as a fundraiser for school! We count our laps by putting rubber bands on and for every lap that is run people donate money to school!  It was great fun and fabulous exercise!

Busy, busy, busy!

I have been so busy with school, assessments, the common core, trainings and teaching!  We have been working so hard to achieve the benchmarks for this quarter!

We have been working on one to one correspondence with numbers 1-10.  I have also been adding in numbers 11-20 to throw in additional challenge.

We have also been working on an apple unit!  We have been incorporating apples into science, reading and writing!  The best part was having the investigation during science.  We used describing words to explain our 5 senses! So fun!

I have also been busy crafting with my friend! We have been using the Cricuit to make different cut outs!  I have been working for my community helpers unit and seasons!  Here is what I've done so far!

So after working so hard the past few weeks.. Some of my kids have really made me smile! A couple if my students have gotten their haircut and have coincidentally worn the same outfits!  This has been such a great year and its only the first quarter!
